What Fate Awaits the Witcher?

I know this is old news at this point, but I wanted to throw my 2 cents into the discussion.

Henry Cavill is setting down his swords and leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia. Liam Hemsworth is going to take on the role in his stead for the next season. Apparently, he auditioned for the gig back in 2018.

The internet’s reaction to the news

Hilariously, back when it was announced that Cavill was going to be playing Geralt, I was one of the folks online doubting him. Then I learned how he is a total nerd and a die-hard fan of the novels, which gave me some hope that his performance as the White Wolf would work. As it turned out, he was perfect for it! I loved his performance and he nailed Geralt. It was like he was born to play him.

So you can imagine how gutted I was to find out he isn’t returning for the next season.

From what I can tell, it’s due to scheduling issues with the new Superman project. However, there seems to have been tension between Cavill and the writers for a while. He has been trying to champion the original story while the writers want to take the source material in a new direction. There are several stories floating around online about how the show writers seem to dislike the books. A former producer and writer for the adaptation when so far as to say t “I’ve been on a show — namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not [fans] or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material).”

There are also claims that Cavill’s attempts to keep the show faithful to the original story didn’t work, one story even suggested that Cavill was mocked for defending the original so much. While this hasn’t been confirmed I can’t help but feel sad for him. It is alleged that the clash started during season two, which might have turned a touch toxic making the choice to leave the role a bit easier for Cavill.

As for his replacement, I am not sure about Liam Hemsworth. Sure, he has the build but I don’t see how he can hold a candle to Cavill. Then again, I did doubt him in the beginning so maybe I’m wrong. To be honest, I don’t think I will continue watching the show to find out. Like Cavill, I am a fan of the books and was invested because the show was marketed as being loyal to the books in question. With Cavill leaving, so is my interest.

Are you going to watch the next season? Please let me know your thoughts on this fiasco in the comments!
