Big news, Whovians.
Ncuti Gatwa, star of Netflix’s Sex Education, has been revealed to be the new 14th Doctor.
Alright, I am buzzing.
Not only is Russell T Davies (aka one of if, not the best, Doctor Who writers ever) back, but with the charming Gatwa as our favourite Timelord, we are in for something special. I loved him in Sex Education, Eric Effiong was my favourite character. Gatwa brought so much heart and depth to the show, so I am confident he can do so at the helm of the TARDIS.
I will confess, that I haven’t watched much of the newer series because I hated the writing. The potential was there, but it just felt so wrong. Chris Chibnall really dropped the ball if you asked me. I could go on a whole rant about him and another writer I, frankly, hate. But that’s for another time, I’m in too good a mood for that kind of negativity. Having Davies return was a great play by the BBC. I was already hopeful about the new upcoming season when the news broke that he was coming back, but this new Doctor seals the deal for me.
There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.Ncuti Gatwa
Gatwa is making history already being the first Black actor to play the iconic role. Also, it is great to see another Scot in the big blue box again. I know he is going to smash it. My only complaint is that we have to wait a year for his debut. Dammit, I want to see it now!
Bring on 2023!
