I am writing this under an appreciable mental strain, since by tonight I shall be no more.
Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft
With October in full swing, it’s the perfect time to play some creepy games. Luckily for me, I found a free game on steam which not only disturbs you but is a loving tribute to one of Lovecraft’s macabre
stories.
Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft is a 3D narrative experience made by Indie developer Bit Golem, based on the story of the same name. In Dagon, You play as a morphine fueled former ship officer as he recounts the nightmarish situation he found himself in.
The graphics in this game are both stunning and disturbing. So lifelike and vivid, especially when the horror ramps up in the second half. I would suggest playing with a controller as it adds to the experience. Sometime this month there will be an update allowing folk to play Dagon in VR. Again, for free. If you are lucky enough to own a VR headset, you need to play this!
I will admit, I jumped a few times during the game. I think it was worse since I had to activate the jumpscare that I knew was coming, scaring me even more. The ending freaked me out, I loved it.
The experience takes about half an hour to complete. Through the game, there are little tidbits of real-world info. They are factoids about Lovecraft, the impact of his work and some additional context.
If you are looking for an eerie game to play this Halloween, might I humbly suggest Dagon? I mean, come on! A loyal retelling of a classic horror story in gruesome detail, all for the low price of nothing at all. What’s not to love? Or rather, fear. You need to check it out this spooky season.
