I have some seriously mixed feelings about this upcoming game.
As a longtime fan of the Saints Row series, I was hyped as hell for a new game. Now, I apricate that it is still early days. Yet I am not exactly sold on this reboot. I know what they are going for, a new location, a new crew, and a new story. However, it seems like folks aren’t keen on this new take on Saints Row.
The trailer has been up for less than 24 hours and boy, that like to dislike ratio speaks volumes.
On one hand, I get the choice to have us follow a different cast. After the events of Saints Row IV, it would not make much sense to continue that storyline. Chances are it would be rather forced. Maybe it could have worked, but it looks like they are planning on making a new series here.
On the other hand, it feels somewhat hollow, as if something is missing. It doesn’t have that Saints Row flare to it, you know?
I will defend the game a bit on one front. A shocking amount of fans are raging, claiming the series is now “SJW garbage”. To be honest, I am not surprised. The about of video essays popping up claiming the game is all but dead on arrival because of the designs of the characters? Really? I mean, the designs are fairly dull, in my opinion, but it is a stretch to say that. It reminds me of the guy who photoshopped Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn. Same energy.
Maybe we are all being a tad harsh, considering how much we adored the previous games. Bais is a powerful thing. However, I do understand why some folk feel disappointed. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t myself. It feels like a fresh start, so why not just call a spade a spade and make a new series not connected to Saints Row?
Ultimately though, I am waiting for more info to be made available before casting any judgements. After all, the game isn’t coming out until next year, things can change. I’m going to be cautiously optimistic. Although, signs are not looking good.
