Page Turner: My Best Friend’s Exorcism

Before we begin, just wanted to share a little something. In a few hours, I am getting my second shot! I am prepared this time for the side effects, bring it on.

They say that true friendship never ends. Well does that still apply when one of said best friends is possessed by force of unspeakable evil?

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix is a horror novel about two teenage childhood friends, Abby and Gretchen. In 1988, Abby notices that Gretchen isn’t acting like herself, she seems… off. Slowly, Gretchen’s situation keeps getting weirder and strange things keep happening to her and around her.

As the nightmare continues, Abby realises it is up to her to figure out what is happening to her best friend. But will she be able to help her, or is she too far gone?

I am a sucker for 80s horror, so My Best Friend’s Exorcism is right up my alley. This book is 80s overload at times, in the best possible way. It started slowly, but as the plot progressed the unsettling atmosphere kept growing. You truly feel like you are right next to Abby during this misadventure, feeling isolated and helpless.

Abby is a brilliant protagonist, you truly feel her pain and fear during the events of the novel. You see a fairly confident young woman be pushed to the brink, the horror surrounding her as things go from bad to worse. Since we follow her perspective, we are also as clueless as she is, for the most part, adding to the terror.

The supportive cast is more or less your standard 80s horror cast but more fleshed out. We spend enough time with the friend circle that we do feel bad for them as they start to suffer.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism manages to be funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking but above all horrifying all at the same time. I laughed, cried and gasped while reading this novel. It was a ride, a horrific one. I loved every second of it. I felt like I was possessed myself while reading, it was impossible for me to put the novel down.

There is a film adaptation in the works. I’m going to keep my eye on the project, they better do justice to this horrifically fun novel or I will be livid.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism might just be my favourite horror novel. It has it all. Tension so thick you could cut it with a bloody machete, a blood-chilling story with genuinely disturbing moments and suspense that leaves you on the edge of your seat. A must-read for any horror lover.
