Why did no one tell me that one of my favourite mangas is getting an anime adaptation? Or the fact that said anime adaptation will be out next month?
I will admit, I have been out of touch with the anime community for a while. No reason, in particular, I simply ended up drifting away. However, there was a manga I kept reading, The Way of the Househusband by Kousuke Oono.
The Way of the Househusband is a slice of life comedy following former Yakuza member Tatsu, who has given up his life of crime to become the best homemaker for his wife Miku. That’s more or less the plot.
It is the most wholesome and hilarious manga I have read in ages. Tatsu does his job as a house husband with the same intensity he used back in his Yakuza days. Even using some of the skills he learned back then to clean, cook and shop. I’m not even joking.
Tatsu is such a fun character, while he comes across as intense and frighting, he is a total sweetheart these days. Priding himself on finding the best bargains, cooking delicious food and keeping his house spotless. While there isn’t really any romance, you can tell he does truly love Miku due to all the thoughtful gifts and gestures he constantly showers her with. It shows he has taken the time to understand her and her passions.
It is somewhat hinted that he may have some kind of PTSD from his violent past. After all, he met Miku after a bloody fight. He avoids violence whenever possible these days, but can still rough someone up if they cross the line. He is such an endearing character, it’s no wonder he took the internet by storm.
Miku doesn’t get as much time to shine as the star of the show is Tatsu, but I love their dynamic. They are a very wholesome married couple. Miku is shown to be a hardworking designer with a bit of a hidden Otaku streak. I love that she gave Tatsu such a cute nickname, Tacchan.
The supporting cast is brilliant too. No spoilers but it seems that Tatsu isn’t the only former Yakuza who wants to settle down.
The Way of the Househusband has become a go-to comfort read for me. I keep rereading the first couple of volumes when I feel low. There is something so charming about Tatsu that is also rather comforting.
April 8th can’t come soon enough.
Wait, this is getting an anime adaptation? That’s so exciting!
