I think this might just the best game to play this Halloween.
Phasmophobia is a four-player online co-op psychological horror game. You and your team are tasked to investigate haunted locations and figure out what kind of spook is behind it.
I have a rule to not buy any Early Access games as I have been burnt before. However, after I heard glowing reviews from friends I decided that it was worth a shot.
Peer pressure was right this time.
Even as a total scardey cat, I love this game so much! Yes, I do scream and freak out, but I also laugh to the point of tears when something happens to someone else.
The first time I played, Thomas kept getting killed. We could hear his screams from the van and I, being a terrible friend, laughed so hard it physically hurt.
The gameplay is straightforward. You have different items available that you use to figure out what the ghost is. Some items cost more or are level locked. On top of correctly identifying the ghost, there are a few other tasks you can do to get a bit more money, such as taking a photo of the ghost or having an encounter, things of that nature.
If you die, you lose the items you brought with you.
On the topic of dying, that is where the real horror comes in. Each ghost has its own prefered hunting style. After five minutes have passed, the ghosts will start hunting down players. Some are easier to escape from, some target one player at a time or they will just go for the kill as soon as possible.
I don’t think I will ever get used to those hands reaching across your face and those voices whispering to you as your life is snuffed out. Truly the stuff of nightmares.
Frankly, I kind of like the glitches. I find them oddly charming and they often end up making us all laugh. None of them impacts the game, so I don’t mind them. Maybe there are worse glitches that are game-breaking and I have just been lucky to not encounter them. I can’t say for sure.
My only real issue is the audio problems. Namely, when other players can’t hear me and vice versa. I am looking into how to prevent and fix them, but they are so annoying. I am willing to give them a pass since again, this is an Early Acess game.
Phasmophobia is a terrifyingly good time! If you go into this game expecting a polished product, you will be disappointed. However, if you want a fun and horrifying game to play with friends this spooky season, then you need to get Phasmophobia.
Happy ghost hunting, try not to die!
