This has been a long time coming.
If you know me in real life, you will know that my fashion sense is all but non-existent. My wardrobe is mostly geeky tees, jeans and hoodies with the odd decent jumper I bought for work. That is, until recently.
Now, that’s not to say that the aforementioned items are inherently bad. I still like them, but for a while now, I have wanted to update my wardrobe and start to cultivate a proper look.
What kicked this yearning into hyperdrive was something I stumbled across online. An aesthetic called Dark Academia.
I was hooked from the start.
If you haven’t heard about it, think 1940s prep school uniform kinda vibe. I fell in love with it instantly because I am a sucker for vintage looks mixed with something kinda modern. Plus it also encompasses some of my interests such as mythology, reading and learning.
With some savings and birthday money, I started buying new pieces. Some decent dark trousers, a vest and a few polo shirts.
I am even trying to learn a few new hairstyles instead of the can’t be bothered ponytail and the I’m trying to look somewhat decent bun that I keep wearing in seemingly endless rotation.
This may seem dull but for me, it’s pretty much a new adventure. Thankfully my younger sister is still home and according to her, has nothing better to do until October so she has taken on the role of personal stylist of sorts.
I know this might not sound rather interesting, but it does mean a lot. I’m trying to take better care of myself, inside and out. I feel a bit more confident wearing these looks compared to just tees.
Don’t get me wrong, there are still days where I can’t be bothered to get properly dressed so I just throw on a tee and some shorts. However, I am trying to gently ease myself into wearing proper outfits more often. Spending more time looking out something to wear rather than pulling out the first top from my chest of drawers.
Again, this might not sound major, but this is a big step forward for me. Considering how I can’t really see anyone at the moment, if this turns out poorly, one will be around to witness it. It’s the perfect time to try something new.
