New Obsession: Resident Evil 2

This game, oh boy this game.

I am still rather new to the Resident Evil franchise so when I played the demo for Resident Evil 2 a few days before it’s release I decided that I would wait a few months before getting it as I still have several games I got for Christmas that remain untouched.

I ended up buying it the next day. I am weak.

Resident Evil 2 follows Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they fight for survival in the zombie-infested Racoon City.

At the time of writing, I have mostly played Leon’s story with only a bit of Claire’s as frankly, of the two Leon is my favourite.

Now, I don’t know if it is fair to call this a truly terrifying game as I am a total wimp and jump and/or scream constantly while playing. It’s so bad that I need to play it when I’m home alone because apparently my screams are so loud they annoy my family, sorry!

So in my opinion, this is a scary game although it’s not really the zombies that scare me as you can dodge them without too much bother as you get used to them. No, the worst is the Tyrant known as Mr X.

I hate him so much! I once spent around ten minutes hiding in a safe room too scared to make a break for it simply because I could hear him pacing outside. Although all the ‘X gon give it to ya’ memes help take away a bit of the fear factor, I’m still terrified of him.

On the note of safe rooms, even when you are hiding in one you never feel truly safe. With everything out to get you and you have next to no supplies the only thing you can really do is run. I have a bad habit of running right into Lickers when I am out of bullets or into a room with only one exit and multiple zombies as Mr X chases me.

No matter where you go there is a seriously haunting atmosphere. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. Also someone who loves puzzles, I do enjoy that element of the game.

Some of them are a nice momentary distraction from the horrors lurking in dark but it can be infuriating when you are so close to wrapping up a major puzzle only to get killed and having to redo all that work.

Now, the main reason I am obsessed with Resident Evil 2 is the characters, namely Leon. You grow to really care about them so you want to see them make it out alive. Admittedly since this is a remake you do know their fates but still.

My best friend has teased me about how obsessed I have gotten as she hasn’t seen it this bad since our High School days. We hung out in town and I went into every GAME looking for a Resident Evil 2 T-Shirt they had in stock when it first came out but they are all sold out. Thankfully I did find a great hat and dog tags so it’s fine.

Overall I really do love this game and it has given me a better appreciation for the franchise as a whole. I even found a few of the books at my local library and started reading them. Once I finish both Leon and Claire’s A and B I will finally get round to finishing Resident Evil 4, I promise!

  1. I’ve just started doing the B routes for Claire and Leon and it plays like a whole new game because some of the events are now completely different to the first playthrough. Plus, I’m trying it on Hardcore difficulty so FML XD
