One of the reasons I tend to avoid romance stories, namely romcoms is because I get irritated when they overplay the ‘will they, won’t they’ or the ‘I won’t say I’m in love’ troupes.
However, an anime that not only plays into it but also exaggerates it to high heaven? Now your talking!
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War or Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai – Tensai-tachi no Ren’ai Zunōsen follows the exploits of Student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice-president Kaguya Shinomiya. The two are in love but they both believe if they confess their feelings the other one will have all the power in the relationship.
So they try to get the other to confess first. Needless to say, hijinks ensue.
First things first, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is hilarious!
Miyuki and Kaguya are both very intelligent people and the extreme calculations and schemes they come up with are brilliant. However, they are often foiled by the oblivious Secretary Chika Fujiwara.
Speaking of Chika, normally comedic foil characters can be very annoying and off-putting, at least to me. However Chika is well-meaning, she just doesn’t understand the battle at hand. Plus she is sweet, adorable and brings a lot of comedy to the show outside of being the foil.
In fact, she is my favourite character in the show. I love her to pieces! She has been friends with Kaguya since Junior High and is a good friend to both her and Miyuki despite accidentally throwing a monkey wrench into the works.
Side note, as someone who overthinks almost everything seeing our romantic leads do the same is oddly relatable.
Despite how the premise makes them sound, Kaguya and Miyuki are likeable characters. Kaguya comes across as cold but is actually kind and innocent. Miyuki is very popular but is a total novice when it comes to romance. The chemistry and conflict between this pair is great and the anime takes full advantage of it.
The show has wonderful comedic timing and combined with the creative setup and jokes, it has quickly become one of my favourite comedy anime.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War isn’t just a comedy though, it also has a lot of heart too. You can see why the would-be couple like each other and even though the pair are at self-declared war they do help each other out and have some cute interactions which makes you root for them to get together.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that the openings and closings are great as well. Chika even gets an ending all to her self and I love it so much!
Overall I recommend Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. I am watching it week to week but I understand that some folk prefer to binge watch so if that applies to you since we only four episodes in so far you might be waiting for a bit.
