Once again I am late to the party, but you know what they say, better late than never.
I decided to grab a game with my birthday cash and was torn between Detroit: Become Human and Far Cry 5.
Ultimately I picked the later as the former had been completely spoiled for me (thanks, internet) but I knew nothing about Far Cry 5 outside of the cult.
Now, I have never played a Far Cry game before so I have no idea how it compares to the other games, but I adore this one!
You play as a Junior Deputy who along with their team goes to arrest Joseph Seed, also known as The Father, leader of the Doomsday Cult, Project at Eden’s Gate. Needless to say, it doesn’t go well and you end up spit up from your team and have to fight to free Hope County from the control of the Cult.
The game gives you different options to accomplish your mission, you can free hostages, destroy Cult property and liberate Cult outposts. Along your journey, you meet Guns for Hire who you can recruit to join you in the fight.
There are two kinds, Fighters are the ones you meet everywhere and you can have up to three of them, and the nine Specialists who have a bit more personality and better abilities.
For example, I have a perk that lets me use two Guns for Hire at a time so my go-to girls are Grace Armstrong the Sniper and Jess Black the Huntress.
My strategy for the most part, particularly liberating Cult outposts is to have the girls take out any lookout and then as many as they can without alerting the other Cultists then I run in guns blazing. Works for the most part.
There are three Fangs for Hire too, at the time of writing I have two of them and I love them. From what I heard this is a bit of a staple in Far Cry. Why did no one tell me! I would have played the series so much sooner had I known!
While the gameplay is extremely fun, another reason I love this game is the characters. Now, I have said it numerous times but I am a sap. I get attached to characters very quickly, and the cast of Far Cry 5 is no exception. Outside of Grace and Jess, my favourite characters are Mary May Fairgrave and Nick Rye.
The Seed family are an… interesting bunch. I can’t say much without giving away any spoilers but you can see why they are feared in Hope County.
I know how this might sound like a dealbreaker but the game goes from a gritty bloody fight to the death for freedom and survival to “Hey, kill a bull as he gets his rocks off so we can eat the balls” in a matter of minutes.

I am not joking, that is an actual side mission. Honestly, this tonal dissonance is great and is another reason I enjoy this game so much.
At the time of writing, I do not have a season pass. I’m considering getting one but since I still have plenty of the game left to go I don’t think I need to. I bought one of the hats though, that counts I guess.
I haven’t been this passionate about a game since Yakuza Kiwami. Heck, one time I started playing around 1pm and didn’t stop until half three in the morning!
Thankfully I started my shift later and got a lift to work so I got another hour to play before I had to leave.
Far Cry 5 is a blast to play and if you enjoy action adventure games then I highly recommend you grab it while it’s on sale.
Now, if you would excuse me, Hope County ain’t gonna liberate itself!
