With today being April Fools Day, or as I like to call it the one day of the year where my trust issues are justified, I thought it would be a good time to talk about my favourite comedy animes.
Before we begin I just want to point out that these are my opinions, if you don’t see your favourite comedic anime series then either it isn’t my taste or I haven’t seen it. Please let me know what animes got you to laugh.
Also, I want to give an honourable mention to Ghost Stories.
It didn’t feel right to give it a spot since the comedy comes from the voice actors doing whatever they wanted to with the dub. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing but I didn’t think it was fair for it to take the place of an anime that had well-written comedy.
So, without further ado, here are my Top Five comedy anime!
ranted talked about this anime before, and my opinions haven’t changed about it since posting that ramble.
Well, there is one update I would like to make to it. I wrote that back in 2016 and complained about the seemingly small fandom it had, at least here in Scotland. However, the fandom has grown rapidly since then and quite rightly too might I add.
With that being said, Man, this anime is a gem.
It’s a slice of life show about a family of sextuplets with wildly different personalities living together and getting into some rather crazy situations.
I said it before and I will say it again, anyone who grew up with siblings will love this anime. Even if you are an only child you will get a kick from the references humour and the unusual dynamic between all of the brothers.
4. The Devil Is a Part-Timer!
How can you not smirk at a title like that?
God, even the tagline “Do you want fries with your hellfire?” makes me smile.
This is another series I’ve ranted about before, I’m starting to see a trend, but that was about the Light Novels, not the anime. At the time I when I wrote that, I hadn’t seen the anime.
Now I have, and I will admit that I prefer the Light Novels a smidge more but the anime is still amazing.
After his defeat, the Demon King and his right-hand man flee to another world where he must make ends meet by working at a fast food joint. Needless to say, hijinks ensue.
If you take anything away from this anime, its that you shouldn’t be rude to fast food employees. You never know, one of them could be Satan. Better safe than sorry.
3. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
You will never know true dread until your Catholic mother walks into the room to see you watching two angels on stripper poles.
I wonder why she is so disappointed in me.
My traumatic incident aside, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is comedy gold.
After being kicked out of heaven for bad behaviour, Panty and Stocking Anarchy must buy their way back home by killing ghosts to obtain ghost coins. To do this Panty turns her Panties into guns and Stocking transforms her Stockings into swords.
That might be the weirdest paragraph I have ever written. However, that doesn’t even scratch the surface of how bonkers this anime is.
Which is exactly why I love it so much.
Filled with crude sex jokes, cursing, chaos and a whole lot of personality, these two angels are anything but angelic.
I know that some people might be a bit miffed that this anime only made it to second place but there is a good reason I gave it the number two spot.
I only started watching it fairly recently.
While I have had many a good laugh from watching the beautiful chaos that is Gintama I do have a special place in my heart for the number one pick so that is why it got the silver.
Still, that doesn’t change the fact that this anime is hysterical.
I’m not even going to try to explain the show as frankly I don’t know how to other than it’s Gintama. I’m not the only one though as anytime I asked someone about this show they would either tell me just to watch it or spend ten minutes trying to do this show justice.
So I’m going to do the former and tell you that it has a lot of great characters, insane plot and fantastic animation, go watch it!
1. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!
Those of you who have read my blog before should have seen this coming a mile away.
I may have written about some of the previous entries before, but I have written about KonoSuba no less than four times! With the first article being penned back in 2016.
Since then, my love for this show has only grown. I even started reading the original Light Novels. I am currently on the third volume.
Side note, if you enjoy the anime you should give the Light Novels a try, they are great.
After his less than noble death, Kazuma is given the choice to be reborn in his world or enter a fantasy world to become a hero. He takes the latter and the arrogant Goddess Aqua with him. Soon the pair forms a team with two more adventures and gets into crazy situation after crazy situation.
I cannot recommend this show enough. Please, if you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favour and watch this masterpiece of an anime as soon as you can. It has it all, fantastic comedy, witty references to gaming and anime culture, parodies and lovably stupid characters.
You will not be disappointed.
