I played Star Trek Online a few years back on PC, but never really got into it. Mostly because my laptop is a hunk of junk. So when I heard that it was now available on PS4, I decided to give it another go.
Star Trek Online is a MMORPG developed by Cryptic Studios and Perpetual Entertainment which has been entertaining Trekkies for over six years. That might explain why the graphics aren’t exactly the best, and the game tends to glitch and bug out a bit. That might be just because my WiFi sucks.
This game is way better than I remember. Admittedly, it is not exactly the best game ever made it is still a fun game with a lot of references. You could make a drinking game out of it, take a shot for every reference. Plus, it is pretty cool to travel to your favourite planets. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the game is free.
You have the choice of three factions, Starfleet, The Klingon Empire and the Romulan Republic. Almost every race in the series is available, outside of the Borg. Also, if you want to waste a lot of time, you can create your own alien race. The reason why you can’t pick the Borg race is that no matter what faction you pick they will be one of your enemies.
The three classes of Science, Tactical and Engineering isn’t just a gimmick. Every now and then opportunities pop up and if you are the correct class these will be able to give you an edge on your mission.
The story differs depending which faction you pick, but outside of a couple of lines and some minor abilities, your race doesn’t impact the game.
I currently have two characters, A ginger Vulcan science officer fighting for Starfleet and an Orion science officer in the Klingon Empire (I have a thing for science, okay?). I will probably make a Romulan character soonish. Does anyone give a hoot about Romulans? I certainly don’t.
Star Trek Online is cheesy, but in a good way. Kind of like the original show. You can tell that the people who made this game are fans of the series. Despite its flaws that might turn some people off, I can’t help but find this game charming and fun. Actually, the worst aspect of this game is the players. I have seen some terrible starship names while flying through space such as the USS Tardis and USS Shinigami. Seriously people, come up with something decent!
If you want to give it a try, Star Trek Online is available on PS4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
