South Park Verses Family Guy.

Sorry for the duff title, there is more to this article than the name implies however statistics show that titles like “Why blank is evil” and “Thing A is a rip off of thing B” get more views. That and I couldn’t think of a better title.

I will try to look at this objectively and to compare the two shows in categories to determine which is the better show over all… Bwahahaha nope! Frankly there is no contest. South Park is so much better than Family Guy ever will be. It’s like comparing Harry Potter to Twilight, it is painfully obvious which one is superior.

Let’s be honest, where would you rather live. Quahog or South Park?

First off, the characters. The funny thing about this is even though Eric Cartman has committed Murder, Rape, Arson, Prostitution, Enforced Cannibalism, Attempted Genocide, Manslaughter, Animal abuse, Hate crimes, Grave robbery, War crimes, Child abuse, Vandalism, Theft, Piracy, Embezzlement, Shoplifting, Terrorism, Drug possession, Smuggling, Armed Robbery and even more felonies he is still a more likable character than Peter Griffin. I would rather hear a speech by Donald Trump than listen to Peter Griffin.

As far as the other Family Guy ‘characters’ go, they are all rather one note and bland. Whereas with South Park, every main character gets their own episodes to shine in, in fact the secondary characters also get proper personalities and their turn in the spotlight.

My personal favourite being a tie between Stan Marsh (who I have cosplayed as on several occasions) and Kyle Broflovski.

Now, there is a character that strikes too close to home, Meg. Not only do we share a name but we also share looks and lack of respect from others. Every time I see her bullied or teased I get flashbacks to my Secondary School days and the bullies. Thanks Family Guy.

The biggest complaint I have about the show is how lazy it is. The show makes no effort to be funny outside of gag humour and celebrity jokes. I understand that comedy is subjective and some people enjoy that kind of humour, but to me it feels forced and lazy. I would say how Family Guy probably has a joke generator, but South Park beat me to it.

With South Park, they keep you guessing. You have no idea where the episode is going to go nor how far they are going to go with the jokes. Making it much more entertaining to watch compared to something so formulaic.

I for one like fart jokes as much as the next person, perhaps more, but I prefer intelligent humour and satire. That’s why I like shows like Russel Howards good news, Rick and Morty and of course South Park. South Park doesn’t take the piss out of just one group of people, they mock everything from pop culture to politics and social issues.

They also made good points about society and engage with their audience. One of the more recent episodes ‘Tweek X Craig’ discussed Yaoi (Japanese boy x boy art) and even used fanart submitted to them by viewers. Has Family Guy done something like that… not that I know of.

Heck, South Park even has better musical numbers! Their musical The book of Mormon won nine Tony Awards.

Overall South Park is the superior show. Better stories, funnier jokes, great character development and all in all a more enjoyable experience.

Growing up, Megan was that one kid at the back of the class reading manga. Now, not much has changed except she started a blog. Basically, your typical geek (although she prefers the term Otaku)
